Today, I have three important home maintenance tips for the winter.
1. Outdoor faucet/spigot. Take the hoses off and put the protector on. If cold air gets into the pipe, the pipe will burst and you’ll have water in your garage and basement. That is not cheap to clean up, so invest in those $2 protectors.
2. Clean your gutters. Get rid of all the leaves and debris that fell during autumn out of there. Otherwise, water will just sit there during the winter. When it freezes, there will be icicles, which can damage the fascia behind the gutters. Icicles can even cause water to get into the roof and the wood sheeting under the roof, causing even further damage. Get that debris out of there before winter hits.
3. Service your furnace. Even if you have the little baseboard heaters or wall heaters, get those cleaned and serviced. Winter is the busiest time of year for these heating companies. The last thing you want is for your heater to go out in the middle of winter and have to wait days to get heat in your house again.
Those are my top three tips for preparing your home for winter. For more home maintenance items, check out this list.
